How do we approach treatment?
As Naturopathic Doctors, our philosophy is to treat the root cause of disease, not just symptoms, using a non-pharmaceutical approach. Depending on what you are coming in for, we use many different types of therapies including:
Botanical Medicine: The healing power of plants
You are probably familiar with common botanical medicines like echinacea for the common cold, oregano for infections, or calendula for cuts and scrapes. Did you know that there are thousands of medicinal plants that make up a Naturopathic Doctor’s materia medica? It’s true! Because each plant has a unique medicinal quality, we choose formulas that are best suited for you and your condition. We choose our herbs from professional suppliers who offer organic and high quality product.
Herbs can be given in tea form, pill form or liquid form (called a tincture). If you are on medication from your family doctor, we are careful to double check for any possible interactions.
Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture
Most of us, at some point in our lives, get run down, tired, achy, stressed and overall out of balance. Acupuncture has a powerful way of restoring balance to the body through the use of fine needles that stimulate your meridians (or energy centres). Most people think of acupuncture as being used for chronic pain but it is actually helpful for almost anything. We have helped hundreds of people for things like:
- Infertility (including IVF/IUI support)
- Anxiety and stress
- Menstrual irregularities
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Nausea in pregnancy
- Eczema and other skin issues
- Food cravings (sugar addiction)
- Smoking cessation
Lifestyle Counseling: How you live shapes how you feel!
Mental attitudes and emotional states are critically important elements in healing and disease. Addressing all aspects of a your life, identifying and addressing the impact that stress and life events have on a your health is an important aspect of naturopathic treatment. Naturopathic Doctors are trained to counsel you on diet, lifestyle, specific stressors, exercise and occupational and environmental hazards that may be impacting your well-being. That is what we mean when we say we must treat the whole person, body, mind and spirit.
Homeopathic remedies are made up of dilute natural substances that are used to stimulate the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It has been around for hundreds of years and is used as a key part of health care in many countries around the world. In fact, it is becoming so popular in Canada that we are now seeing remedies popping up on the shelves in chain grocery stores!
You can use homeopathy for just about anything from cold sores to seasonal allergies to teething.
We use homeopathy in my practice in the form of pellets and liquids. It is especially helpful for patients who are more sensitive including children, the elderly and those who have reacted strongly to medications and supplements in the past. It is very safe and effective.
A homeopathic immune booster is available seasonally.
Naturopathic Doctors are not dieticians or nutritionists, but we believe that good nutrition and optimal digestion are the keys to good health. We can help you pinpoint nutrient deficiencies, undiagnosed food sensitivities, or other issues that may be causing your symptoms. We can make recommendations to improve your overall nutrition, suggest proper supplementation (vitamin B12, Calcium, etc), and diagnose any underlying issue that may be causing your symptoms.
